Gear cutting for custom components

Custom Gear Cutting Capabilities

Every gear geometry does not call for the same manufacturing process. We maintain a range of specialized gear-cutting equipment so the manufacturing method can be selected around the gear type, tooth geometry, size, drawing requirements and production needs.

Select a process to see the equipment and range behind it.

1/4″–60″ equipment range

Gear Hobbing

Gear hobbing supports the manufacture of spur gears, helical gears, worm gears and spline shafting.

Our overall hobbing equipment range runs from approximately 1/4″ to 60″, on Barber Coleman and Liebherr precision hobbing equipment.

1/8″–36″ diameter

Gear Shaping

Gear shaping supports external and internal gear requirements where shaping is the right process for the component geometry.

Our shaping range runs from approximately 1/8″ to 36″ diameter on Fellows gear shapers, including CNC gear-shaping equipment.

Dedicated Gleason equipment

Bevel Gear Generation

Dedicated Gleason equipment supports custom bevel and miter gear manufacturing.

Our equipment includes Gleason #12, #104 Coniflex High-Speed Bevel Generators and #14 Coniflex machines.

Rack + pinion programs

Rack Gear Cutting

We maintain dedicated equipment for custom rack gearing, including Fellows and Whiton rack-cutting and rack-milling machines.

Rack manufacturing can be paired with custom pinion manufacturing for customer-specific rack-and-pinion requirements.

Worms · lead screws

Thread Milling

Dedicated thread-milling equipment supports the manufacture of worms, lead screws and related threaded power-transmission components.

Our gear department runs Lees-Bradner and Pratt & Whitney thread-milling equipment.

Ratchets to 30″ · clutches to 24″

Involute Gear Milling, Ratchet & Clutch Cutting

Whiton equipment supports involute gear milling and specialized manufacturing requirements, including ratchets and jaw clutches.

Our ratchet capacity extends to 30″ diameter, and jaw clutches are manufactured through 24″ diameter.

Finishing after cutting

Gear Tooth Chamfering & Deburring

Gear manufacturing can also require finishing after tooth cutting.

We maintain dedicated Hey chamfering and Redin automatic gear-deburring equipment, along with additional deburring and gear-finishing equipment.

Gears cut to your specifications

Custom Gears and Power-Transmission Components

We manufacture a broad range of custom gears and related power-transmission components — produced to your drawings, tooth geometry, pitch, material, dimensional requirements, quantities and inspection requirements.

Engineering note · equipment range vs. product range

The capacity of an individual gear-cutting machine should not be confused with the manufacturing range for every product. Our overall hobbing capability runs from 1/4″ to 60″, while our standard spur-gear range is through 36″ diameter. Likewise, bevel and miter gears are quoted through 24″ diameter × 3½″ face.

For requirements outside these product ranges, send us the drawing for a manufacturing review rather than assuming the broader machine envelope applies.

CNC Machining Support

Gear cutting can be combined with CNC machining for other component features.

This lets gear manufacturing be supported by turning, milling, bore machining, keyways, drilled and tapped features, shaft features and other drawing-specific machining requirements.

From drawing or blank to finished component

More Than Gear Tooth Cutting

We support more than the tooth-cutting operation alone.

Depending on your project, you can supply machined blanks for gear cutting — or work with us on a more complete manufacturing process through to the finished component.

A custom gear project can involve

Drawing & Specification Review

Review the component drawing, gear geometry, material, tolerances, quantity and inspection requirements.

Blank & Component Machining

CNC turning and milling support bores, hubs, shafts, keyways, holes and other component features.

Gear Cutting

Select the right hobbing, shaping, bevel generation, rack cutting, thread milling or specialized gear-cutting process.

Secondary Operations

Chamfering, deburring and other finishing operations are incorporated to your project requirements.

Heat Treatment & Finishing Coordination

We work with qualified outside sources for heat-treating processes and metal finishes when they are required.

Inspection

Verify the gear against drawing, purchase-order and job-specific quality requirements with the appropriate gear and dimensional inspection methods.

Finished Component

A finished, inspected component — ready for your next manufacturing or assembly operation.

Prototype, replacement & production

Our RFQ process supports every stage of a gear program:

Industries served

We manufacture gears and related components for OEM and industrial applications, including:

Recent work includes components for transit-car door systems, mattress-making equipment, motorized blinds, medical-device mechanisms and mining equipment.
