Custom splines and spline shafts

Custom Splines and Spline Shafts

Commercial Gear & Sprocket manufactures custom internal and external splines, spline shafts, involute and straight-sided splines and serrations for OEMs, machine builders, replacement applications and industrial equipment.

Splines made to your specifications

Custom Spline Manufacturing

Splines connect shafts and mating components while transmitting rotary motion and torque. Tooth geometry, fit, alignment and dimensional accuracy all decide how well the complete assembly performs.

We manufacture internal and external splines to your drawings, spline type, fit, dimensions, tolerances and material — involute and straight-sided splines, spline shafts, O.D.-fit and side-fit splines, SAE and metric serrations, and custom configurations. Send drawings, specifications, samples or your own components for review.

Spline types, fits and manufacturing range

Custom Spline Specifications

Shaft length

Up to 36″

Internal or external splines and spline shafts up to 36 inches long.

Spline type

Internal & external

Mating internal and external splines.

Tooth forms

Involute & straight-sided

Both tooth forms, to your drawing.

Fit types

O.D. fit & side fit

Serrations

SAE & metric

We work to American National Standard involute splines (ANSI B92.1), metric DIN 5480, SAE and metric DIN 5481 serrations, and straight-sided spline sizes and fits. Your drawing and specified standard control each project.

How we manufacture custom splines

Spline Manufacturing Capabilities

Specialized spline-generating equipment, gear-cutting machinery, CNC machining and calibrated inspection — the approach depends on internal or external, tooth form, fit, shaft geometry, material and quantity.

Internal & External Splines

Involute and straight-sided splines in both configurations, with the specified form and fit read correctly from your drawing.

Involute Spline Manufacturing

Involute splines to your dimensions, tooth geometry, fit and specification, backed by our spline and serration reference data.

Spline Shaft Manufacturing

Spline shafting on our hobbing equipment, up to 36″ long, with additional shaft machining as required.

Secondary Operations

Deburring, chamfering, heat treatment coordination, metal finishing and spline fit inspection.

Spline Shafts and Mating Components

Internal and external splines usually run as mating parts, so we read the specified form and fit from your drawing before we cut. Our hobbing equipment is set up for spline shafting as well as spur, helical and worm gearing.

Spline fit

O.D. Fit or Side Fit? Getting the Spline Right

O.D. fit and side fit locate mating splines in different ways. Read the drawing the wrong way and the parts may assemble but fail early in service — so fit is the first thing we confirm.

What we confirm from your drawing:

Internal or external

Which part carries the spline, and its mating component.

Tooth form

Involute or straight-sided, teeth, pitch and pressure angle.

Fit class

O.D. fit or side fit, and the specified fit class.

Standard

ANSI B92.1, DIN 5480, SAE or DIN 5481 serrations.

CNC machining

CNC Machining for Spline Components

Spline generation and component machining coordinated as one project.

CNC Turning

Shaft diameters, shoulders and journals turned to size.

CNC Milling

Flats, slots and milled features to the drawing.

Shaft Machining

Complete spline shafts machined around the spline.

Bore Machining

Bores for internal spline hubs and couplings.

Keyways

Keyways cut to your specification.

Drilled & Tapped Holes

Holes and other customer-specified features.

Finishing & secondary operations

Secondary Operations for Complete Spline Parts

Outside sources for heat treatment and metal finishing when your part requires it.

Deburring

Burrs removed from spline teeth and machined features.

Chamfering

Spline ends chamfered for clean assembly.

Heat Treatment Coordination

Specified heat treatment sourced and coordinated.

Metal Finishing

Finishes applied as your drawing requires.

Dimensional Inspection

Critical dimensions verified to the drawing.

Spline Fit Inspection

Fit checked with gauges or mating parts.

Prototype to production

Flexible Spline Production

Single Prototypes

Prototype splines and spline shafts for new designs.

Replacement Spline Shafts

Worn or failed spline shafts reproduced.

Internal & External Parts

Hubs, couplings and shafts as matched components.

Production Orders

Short runs through production-volume OEM orders.

Splines for industrial power transmission

Custom Splines for Industrial Applications

Custom splines and spline shafts transmit torque between a shaft and a mating component while holding the required fit and alignment.

Power Transmission

Torque carried between shafts, hubs and couplings.

Drive Couplings

Internal and external splines for drive connections.

Sliding Connections

Splines that allow axial movement under load.

Replacement Spline Shafts

Worn or failed spline shafts reproduced correctly.

Spline quality, fit and inspection

Spline Inspection and Quality Control

Spline inspection has to confirm both the manufactured geometry and the fit between mating parts. We use calibrated equipment and documented procedures for straight-sided and involute splines.

Root Diameter

Straight-sided spline root diameter measured.

Tooth Thickness

Tooth thickness checked against the drawing.

Total Indicated Runout

Runout checked with an indicator or a pin.

Measurement Over Pins

Involute spline size measured over pins.

Documented spline procedures

Straight-sided & involute spline inspection

Gauge Fit Check

Fit verified with spline gauges.

Mating-Part Fit by Class

Fit checked with the mating component to the specified class.

Lead, Profile & Spacing

Tooth elements verified when your drawing or PO requires.

O.D. vs Side Fit

The specified fit confirmed from the drawing before production.

Case study · mining equipment

Stopping Premature Spline-Shaft Failures

01

The Challenge

A mining equipment builder was seeing spline shafts fail early in service.

02

Inspection Findings

From sample parts and drawings we found the previous supplier had made side-fit splines when the drawing called for O.D. fit.

03

The Result

We built a quality plan around the correct spline requirements and were awarded the manufacturing contract.

Custom spline manufacturing FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Splines

Yes. We manufacture internal and external splines, involute and straight-sided, to your drawings, fit requirements and specifications.

Internal and external involute splines, straight-sided splines, spline shafts, O.D.-fit and side-fit splines, and SAE and metric serrations.

We manufacture internal or external splines and spline shafts up to 36 inches long.

They are two different ways of locating and fitting mating splines. The required fit must be specified on the drawing — we have fixed a mining application where a side-fit interpretation of an O.D.-fit drawing caused premature shaft failure.

American National Standard involute splines (ANSI B92.1), metric DIN 5480, SAE and metric DIN 5481 serrations, and straight-sided spline sizes and fits. Your drawing and specified standard govern each project.

Yes. We support single prototypes, short runs and long-run production orders.

Straight-sided splines are checked for root diameter, tooth thickness, runout and fit. Involute splines are checked over pins, for runout, and for fit with gauges or mating parts to the specified class.
