Custom spur gear manufacturing
Commercial Gear & Sprocket manufactures custom spur gears for OEMs, machine builders, replacement applications and industrial equipment — built to your drawings, from a single prototype to full production runs.
Built to your drawings
Spur gears have straight teeth cut parallel to the gear axis, and they are the most common way to transmit rotary motion and power between parallel shafts. We manufacture custom spur gears for new equipment, replacement components, machinery repairs and production applications.
Send us your drawing or specifications. We can cut teeth on blanks you supply, or take the job from raw material to a finished, inspected component — with specialized gear cutting equipment, CNC machining and dedicated inspection equipment under one roof.

Manufacturing
Custom to your requirements
Additional machining, dimensional, material and inspection requirements are reviewed as part of every quotation. Working outside these ranges? Send us your drawing for review.
Spur gear cutting
An efficient, repeatable way to cut external spur gear teeth. Our overall hobbing range runs from approximately ¼″ to 60″, depending on the part.
Chosen when the part geometry or requirements favour it, with shaping capability from approximately ⅛″ to 36″ diameter.
CNC turning and machining for the bores, keyways, holes and other features needed before or after gear cutting.
Chamfering, deburring, heat treatment sourcing, metal finishing and inspection, based on your requirements.
Flexible manufacturing
Every spur gear job is different. Some customers send finished blanks and only need the teeth cut; others want a complete component — machined, cut, finished and inspected. We set up the process around the size, geometry, quantity and requirements of your part.

Spur gear selection
Straight teeth and parallel shafts make spur gears simple, efficient and dependable — which is why they turn up in so much industrial machinery. Getting them right still comes down to the details.
Specifications should be matched to the equipment and its operating environment:
Diameter, number of teeth and diametral pitch or module sized for the drive.
Material and heat treatment chosen for the load, speed and environment.
Bore, keyway and hub features that fit your shaft and assembly.
Pressure angle, face width and tolerances set by the operating load.
CNC machining
CNC turning and machining take care of the features your gear needs before or after the teeth are cut.
Diameters, faces and hubs turned to size on the blank.
Flats, slots and other machined features produced to the drawing.
Bores machined to size and tolerance for the required shaft fit.
Keyways cut to your shaft and keyway specification.
Holes for set screws, mounting and other drawing features.
Additional customer-specified machining completed in the same job.
Finishing & secondary operations
Finishing work is handled as part of the same job, so your gears arrive ready to install.
Burrs removed from cut teeth and machined features.
Specified heat treatment sourced and coordinated for you.
Finishes applied as your drawing requires.
Gear characteristics checked against your drawing.
New, replacement & production
Prototype and first-article spur gears for new machine designs.
Worn or obsolete spur gears reproduced for existing equipment.
Gears made to get repaired machinery back into service.
Short runs through ongoing production-volume orders.
Industrial applications
Custom spur gears are used wherever reliable power transmission between parallel shafts is required. Their straightforward tooth geometry suits a wide range of industrial machinery and mechanical drive systems.

Quality & inspection
We use dedicated gear inspection and dimensional measuring equipment to verify the characteristics that matter on your drawing. List your inspection requirements on the drawing, purchase order or quote request, and we build them into the manufacturing and quality process.
Involute profile checked against the specified tolerance.
Tooth alignment across the face width verified.
Tooth spacing around the gear measured.
Variation between adjacent teeth evaluated.
Radial runout measured as the gear rotates.
Composite action checked against a master gear.
Bores and critical dimensions verified to the drawing.
Additional tolerances on your drawing or PO confirmed.
