Commercial Gear & Sprocket Marks 80 Years; Continues Investing in CNC Gear Manufacturing and Inspection Capability
Made-in-USA custom gears and sprockets produced using ISO-aligned quality practices and to AGMA standards; AGMA member.
EAST WALPOLE, Mass. — July 28, 2026 — Commercial Gear & Sprocket Co., Inc., a Made-in-USA manufacturer of custom gears and sprockets, is celebrating 80 years in business while continuing to modernize its production and inspection capabilities to support demanding OEM and MRO requirements.
Founded in 1946 by William Alfred Shaw and Jake Ian Asurian (who later changed his name to Dorian), the company has served industrial customers for generations. After an early Walpole facility was lost to a fire, the business acquired the property where it operates today in 1960.
President and CEO Tom Shaw, who has led the company since 1989, has emphasized continual reinvestment in equipment to improve accuracy, speed, and tool life. “We want to deliver better parts faster, increase throughput through the shop, and serve our customers better and quicker,” said Shaw.
Manufacturing and inspection capabilities
Commercial Gear & Sprocket operates CNC gear manufacturing capacity that includes a six-axis CNC gear machine, along with two CNC gear machines and a CNC gear shaper. The company also uses inspection equipment including an ITW profile checker, lead checker, and composite tester to support verification and repeatability.
Modernization has been a long-term strategy. Shaw noted that one of his earliest investments after stepping into leadership was purchasing a new CNC lathe in 1992, part of an ongoing effort to replace older technology with machines that improve productivity and consistency.
Commercial Gear & Sprocket follows ISO-aligned quality practices, produces to AGMA standards as required, and is a member of the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA).
Supporting a wide range of applications
Commercial Gear & Sprocket manufactures components used across diverse industrial applications—ranging from large gearing for industrial machinery to smaller precision parts used in specialized assemblies. Examples discussed in a recent company interview include components for transit-car door systems, gearing used in mattress-making equipment, small parts used in motorized blinds, and components for medical device mechanisms. The company has also produced sprockets used in mining equipment, including rock drill applications.
Skilled trades and the future of gear manufacturing
Like many specialized manufacturers, Commercial Gear & Sprocket sees workforce development as a critical long-term need. The company supports hands-on training and recognizes the importance of industry education, including resources provided through AGMA.
